I have been reflecting on what the holidays mean to me recently. It has been really good for me. I grew up in a home where the holidays were viewed as something to stress out over and somehow the day itself got pushed to the background. Holidays were never very big in my house growing up and they became less and less celebrated as the childhood beliefs wore off and the kids got older. I have been reflecting on how this effected my childhood and my adulthood later on. I want to be able to help my children hold on to the magic of the holidays far longer than I was able to. I want the mystery and magical feeling of the true meaning and the Santa Claus version to last as long as possible for both of them. I know that will be hard in the commercial world that we live in, where Christmas starts in October and November. I just hope that I can make them understand it the way I do today. That this time of year is more about giving than receiving. It is about bringing joy to your neighbor and putting a smile on another person’s face. I hope that they will understand the true meaning of the holidays and it won’t take them until they are in their late thirties to realize it.

Here are some cool things I found in my RSS reader today I thought I would share them. First we have some really cool screenshots of the new Apple OS Leopard I found on Mac Rumors. I have to say that it looks really cool and I can not wait until it is available at the end of January. Next, courtisy of Neil Gaiman I found this great FREE audiobook “The Areas of My Expertise” read by John Hodgman, better known as PC in the Get a Mac ads that have become so popular. It looks really cool and you can’t beat the price, and hey if Mr. Gaiman recommends it I am definitely going to get it. On that same note, there is a new ad up on the Get a Mac site called Goodwill, released just in time for the Holidays. It is very funny and a must see, I especially liked the little dig that PC gets in on Mac, and I really enjoyed the theme of the message that we should all just get along.

Well I just wanted to share those with you and I hope you all enjoy the upcoming holidays.

What the hell happened to Christianity?

A very interesting article which I happen to believe. I am not much of a religious person, but I do hold to my beliefs. I think that there has been a radical shift in the sensibilities of this nations Christians. It has gone away from what Jesus taught and moved to a more radical view, which only serves to alienate. I always believed that the message of the Bible and Jesus were to love thy neighbor and to quote the article “come as you are, not as you should be.” The main view of the Political party, that sees itself as the spokesman for all of Christianity, is exactly the opposite. I am a firm believer that a persons faith is their faith, and should be no one else’s business. I also believe that our countries founding fathers had the right idea when they separated church and state. Unfortunately, it seems that our leaders have lost sight of this and are praying on the peoples beliefs to serve their own agenda. We would all do well, especially at this time of year, to remember what Christ’s message really was. Regardless of your faith or beliefs, the message of love your fellow man as you would love yourself is a universal concept that would make the world a much better place. OK I’m getting off my soapbox.

I know it is something that I probably should not do too often, and it does lead to my head aching an awful lot. I realize that I have to write, because I really enjoy it. Even though I was under a tremendous deadline with NaNoWriMo, it was the most enjoyable time I have had in a long time. I felt creative again. It sounds funny, a graphic designer saying that he felt creative writing. I have come to the conclusion that my job offers very little opportunity to be creative. My boss calls it the fast food of design with good reason. I felt alive, creatively, for the first time since design school. I enjoyed the way the story flowed from me. It was like I was just transcribing the story as it was related to me. It was a nice feeling, having the words flow from me.

I, though, had to punish myself, by taking this joy away. I have been very depressed lately, just subsisting, living like a robot, doing what I need to, to get by. I’ve needed to become a bit emotionally distant, trying to distance myself from them. I don’t want to fall into the same trap as before. I need to understand why I fell down, what was the cause, and until I know I can’t trust myself to feel anything. I need to withdraw to protect myself, and my family. I just hope that they understand my fear. I have entertained thoughts of writing again. I worry that it will lead me to feel again, lead me down the path to my destruction.

So I am at a crossroads. Do I return to writing and risk feeling joy, and opening myself to the emotions again, or do I just not write and continue as I have for the past 2 weeks. Looks like I need to think on this some more.
