The end is nigh!
Filed Under Family, Life, NaNoWriMo, Writing | Leave a Comment

Well my end is anyway. I tried to reach the 50,000 word goal and fell a little short. I have had some problems in my personal life, problems that I am the direct cause of. They have caused me to not write, as well as other stress in my home life. I still believe that I did well in my first showing for NaNoWriMo. I will definitely try again next year. It did teach me one thing, that if I put my mind to it I can accomplish a hell of a lot. I can even write more than I ever have before. Not exactly sure how good it is, though my friend Chris says that it is good. I still need to finish it, proof it and edit it. So I’m a long way off from it being finished but at least I know that I can do it. I can write. NaNoWriMo was great for me, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to write. It made me realize that I can write, and also that I can’t let my internal editor stop me.
I just hope that I can learn to solve the other things that have been the root of all the issues in my personal life. I know damn well that I am going to try. I have two beautiful kids and an incredible loving and tolerant wife, who puts up with way to much shit from me, to just give up on them. If I need to remake myself from the ground up, so be it. I’ll just have to do it. Enough about that, there will be more later I’m sure.

Day 21 and I’m Halfway there
Filed Under NaNoWriMo, Writing | Leave a Comment

I know I only have 10 days left and I just hit the 25000 word mark. I’m trying. I have written more in the last 20 days than I have in the last 20 months. I have to say that I’m proud of my accomplishment though I was hopeful that I would get there. 50000 words before the 30th seems like an awfully long way off. I’m going to keep going I’m not planning on giving up, not by a long shot. I still have a lot of my story yet to write and I’m excited about the development of my characters. I am really looking forward to seeing it through to the end, even if it isn’t until January.

Day 16, man is this getting hard
Filed Under Life, NaNoWriMo, Writing | 2 Comments

It’s not the writing that is hard, it is writing with everything going on around you. I’ve had to deal in the past few days with my daughter getting diagnosed with Acid Reflux. She now refuses to sleep because when she lays down she ends up gagging and vomiting. This needless to say has limited the sleep opportunities of her, my wife and myself. I also feel that it has been affecting my son, though he would not admit that. Add to this the stress of work with moved up deadlines for Thanksgiving, and pressure from my boss to pick up the slack of others in the office. My head feels like it is about to explode.
So what does this mean? Should I quit on NaNoWriMo. No way! I’ve had the best time writing this month and the deadline imposed on me has definitely helped. I have written more on this story than I have on any other. I think this experience has been great and I would absolutely do it again next year. I’ve learned a lot about my writing and about myself from this. I learned that the first time through the story doesn’t have to be perfect. That is why you have to edit your novel, AFTERWARD! I realize how much that way of thinking has paralyzed me in the past.
I am glad for the experience though it has been hard and I now have to average 2000 words a day to reach the goal. I’m hopeful that I will and if I don’t I will next year.

Day 13 update
Filed Under NaNoWriMo, Writing | Leave a Comment

I wrote my butt off today. Did some at work, while my son was at karate and for about two hours tonight. I nearly did 4000 words. I’m happy with where I am, even though I am still 3600 words behind pace. But at least now I know if I give it a little effort then I can definitely get back there. I’m home tomorrow from work with my daughter so I’m hoping that when she naps I’ll be able to get even closer. If I can do as much as I did today I’ll only be 1300 words off pace and if I can get one more day like today I’ll be back to where I should be. I am really looking forward to hitting 20000 words. I’ve never transcribed a story as long as that before and having a hard deadline is really the kick in that pants that I needed. As Neil Gaiman says Your not a writer unless you write. You know what he is absolutely right. Well I’m off to get some sleep and dream about where my story is going to go next.

Ok day 13 and man where did the days go
Filed Under NaNoWriMo, Writing | Leave a Comment
Day 13: I’m not exactly sure what happened to the past few days. I’ve been able to write on some and do a lot of words. I wrote almost 3000 words one day. I have fallen quite a bit behind but I do have tomorrow off with our little girl. I’m hoping to get some heavy duty writing done in the next two days and try to play a bit of catch up. I have about 7000 words to make up just to get back on pace. I just hope I can get back on pace.

Day eight, oh woe is me.

I know you have all been wondering why my word count has stalled. I am wondering as well, actually no I know the reason. The past two days have been absolute hell at work. We fell about 2 days behind in our work over the weekend. I am not exactly sure how it happened, I have my suspicions. They are not supervised over the weekend. That is where the problem lies I believe. The inmates running the asylum so to speak. I have been building ads like a fiend the past two days and working insane hours. I wrote a bit monday night, but my brain has been turned to mush by my work. I plan on writing a bit today but now I’ve fallen about 4000 words behind. I’ve got to kick it up a notch and get my fingers tapping.

Ok it is day six

I’m way behind. I was planning on writing on during the tailgate for the big Colts - Pats game (don’t get me started about the game I won’t get any writing done). I Wanted to head out around 3 pm to start tailgating, and my brother in law didn’t show up at my house until 5. So needless to say I in my haste and anger I forgot my laptop. By the time we got settled and eat it was time to go into the game. So I got no writing done yesterday. Now instead of being ahead of the game I am 2000 words behind. I need to get some serious writing done today to get caught up. The only problem there is that we are four books behind at work. It will definitely be a challenge I just hope I’m up for it. It could be a long night.

Day four and right on track
Filed Under NaNoWriMo, Writing | Leave a Comment

Day Four is here and I’m am right on track. The story is starting to just flow from me and it has actually gotten easier. I’m getting a better feel for the characters and the world is starting to flush itself out nicely. I was surprised at how much I got done today given the myriad of phone calls I received from work today. Sometimes I wonder if they can make decisions on their own. I was also surprised that I was able to write about a thousand words at Chuck E. Cheese today. That should be worth something right there. Any parent out there who has been in a Chuck E. Cheese knows that it is not an atmosphere conducive to writing. I’m pretty proud of myself and I know that I will hit that 50,000 words. I have confidence, which is something that I lacked in the past. I finally feel like a writer and I’m Loving it!!!!

Day three update
Filed Under NaNoWriMo, Writing | Leave a Comment

Day three and I am back on pace. I was able to do about 2000 words today and the story is still on the mark and headed where I want it to go. I got about a thousand words done when my son was in his karate class and I was able to get some more work done after dinner tonight. My wife was kind enough to let me write while she got the kids to bed. I can’t thank her enough for that.
I’m hoping to be able to get at least 2000 words done tomorrow maybe even more and I’m hoping to get a real lot done while Im tailgating at the Colts vs Patriots game on sunday. Should be interesting to write a fantasy novel in the parking lot at Gillette stadium. I’m hoping to not get to drunk to write, but no guarantees there.

day two hit a few bumps
Filed Under NaNoWriMo, Writing | Leave a Comment
Ok day two wasn’t as productive for me. Not that I didn’t have the story in my head just that between work, my doctors appointment and the extreme amount of pain that I’ve been in since my doctors I only had about an hour of uninterrupted writing. I did get 600 words in while I waited at the doctors office. I am also ahead of the daily pace that I have set for myself. I am hoping for a better day today when I can sit for an hour while my son has Karate and can make some time to write after the kids go to bed. I hope to get about 1600 to 1700 words in today and even more on the weekend. I plan on writing while tailgating at the big game in Foxboro on sunday night, so that will be an interesting experience.
