It has been a while
Filed Under Family | Leave a Comment
I haven’t posted in a while, and with good reason. I have been reading a lot lately, averaging about a hundred pages a day, which is good for me with work, family etc. I’ve also been writing a lot in my analog journal. Not just personal notes but also some writing exercises and some fiction as well. All this and I’ve been getting ready for my two week vacation. I am so psyched to be able to get away for two weeks. I haven’t been away from work for longer than a week since my son was born. He turns seven in September. I am looking forward to this, I have been for quite a while. I don’t even know if I’ll have internet access up there, which will probably be a blessing and allow me to get some writing and relaxing done. The place we are stay at is beautiful, with a stunning view of the presidential range of the White Mountains in NH. You can see the place by clicking here. I plan on relaxing, some bike rides, some tennis and maybe a hike. I also plan on doing a lot of writing and reading. I’m taking five books with me, and if I finish all of those I’ll get some more. So if I’m not around for a while, I’ll be enjoying nature and relaxing by the pool, writing, reading and enjoying my time away from work and with my family.

New Writing Exercise
Filed Under Writing | Leave a Comment
I was listening to the Secrets Podcast today and Mike Stackpole offered an interesting writing exercise for us would be writers to try. I have been struggling with my writing lately. I have been having problems getting my stories down on the page. It hasn’t helped that I haven’t really put in the effort to put butt in seat and pen to paper. I’m making a concerted effort to do that this week. I’m leaving for vacation in a week and I want to use this exercise to jump start me on a story that I can continue to write while I’m on vacation. I’m also hoping that it will help get me out of this slump. If you are interested in trying it, listen to The Secrets #17. I will post what I do both here and in The Secrets Forum.

Once again Nature amazes me.
“The arc isn’t a rainbow in the traditional sense it is caused by light passing through wispy, high-altitude cirrus clouds. The sight occurs only when the sun is very high in the sky (more than 58° above the horizon). The hexagonal ice crystals that make up cirrus clouds must be shaped like thick plates with their faces parallel to the ground.”

Ok I hope this isn’t a reflection

Ok I hope this isn’t a reflection on fantasy writers as a whole. It is quite funny, but it is the kind of laugh that trails off into silence as your read it. I really hope that no one looks at my writing this way.

Do I look like a party planner to you?
Filed Under Family | Leave a Comment
Don’t get me wrong the day has not been all bad, but I’ve been mulling over the phone call my brother made this morning. He is visiting from out of state, with his “wife”. He hasn’t been in our area for quite a while. He calls me on my cell, while I’m at work and expects me to be able to “chat” with him. I have work to do. What is he thinking? Then he makes arrangements for us to get together on Saturday, which is fine. Then he says, “We can have a cook out and invite all the guys. You can call them all and see if they want to come over and hang out.” I’m paraphrasing here but you get the idea. So he comes to town and on the day he arrives he calls me to set up a shindig at my home. I have to call everyone and invite them over. When did I get appointed party planner for him and his wife? It bothers me that he has had time to set this stuff up in advance. Most of the guys now have kids and family and getting together on such short notice as two days is almost never a possibility. He isn’t the one that is going to look like a jerk when the phone call is made. It will be me. I’ll have to answer all the questions, I’ll have to try and explain why they weren’t given more notice. He on the other hand, will just complain when no one shows up on Saturday and say how crappy a job I did getting everyone together. Got to love family.
